What started out as a largely one-sided event in the Australian Rugby League has turned out to be arguably the biggest and toughest sporting event in the country – the State of Origin Series!
The new format of the series as we know it now started in the year 1980 when players were selected based on the state they initially come from. Before that, players that compete in the Interstate series are selected based on the state they currently reside in. That change in format is what catapulted the competition into what it is today.
The State of Origin series has been fiercely competitive since its inception – the period where one team was utterly dominant was between 2006 and 2013 that saw Queensland Maroon win every single shield in that period. However, New South Wales Blue has won 3 out of the last five, including the last two (2018 and 2019 State of Origin Series). The question many rugby fans are asking is that will New South Wales Blue continue their impressive streak or will Queensland claim its 22nd shield during the 2020 edition.
Millions of people worldwide watch the series and the 2020 edition will be no different. In fact, the popularity of the series has continued to grow in other countries and regions such as the USA, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. This has made the demand for the State of Origin live stream higher than ever before.
For Aussie fans, you can watch the series live on 9Now – a free on-demand service provided by the official broadcaster, Nine Network.
Fans in New Zealand and select Pacific countries can enjoy a live stream of the series using the Watch NRL app; it comes at a price of $33 a month.
