Whistling Fish Pottery

Mj Carlson of Whistling Fish Pottery has had the clay bug since she was
old enough to dig it from her parents back yard. Her formal training and
exposure came as early as third grade. That love affair continued all
the way through college, where she obtained a degree in a subject she
found as interesting and fun as pottery, Marine Biology with a
concentration in Marine Ecology. During this time she continued her
studies in ceramic sculpture to develop her art.

After graduation she tore herself away from clay and went to work as a
fisheries observer with the commercial fishing fleet in Alaska, where
she became exposed to a common and old superstition that whistling on
board a boat was "whistling up a storm". The image and idea of a
"whistling fish" protecting itself from the nets was born.

Armed with her experiences and observations of nature in all its glory,
she migrated south to Oregon to continue her pursuit of her art and love
affair with clay.

Mj Carlson and Whistling Fish Pottery now reside in a small town on the
beautiful coast of Oregon. There she teaches hand-built pottery and
ceramic sculpture for a small college as well as creating beautiful pots
for bonsai influenced by the beauty and her observations of nature in
the Northwest and Alaska.
